What is Waterpreneurs ?
Waterpreneurs will be incorporated in a couple of months. As we gain traction and visibility in the world of impact investing and water stakeholders, we see the need to further clarify what is Waterpreneurs.
Essentially,
Waterpreneurs will support
the scaling-up of impact investments
financing the growth of local water entrepreneurs
who are contributing to the realisation of
the human right to water and sanitation.
The idea of Waterpreneurs came from the WaterLex Business & Human Rights programme (www.waterlex.org), out of dialogues with established water experts. True to social entrepreneurship principles, the enabling environment of WaterLex, through a strategic partnership, will provide Waterpreneurs with a human rights foundation to secure and scale-up business involvement to create greater access to safe affordable water and sanitation for low income populations.
Waterpreneurs will work in the field to generate impact in local communities and will connect businesses and non-profits with each other based on shared interests. Waterpreneurs will also collaborate with corporations that have supply chains in water-stressed areas.
The Waterpreneurs core team is currently finalising its governance model: an independent for-profit organization, B-Corp certified, owned by a foundation under Swiss law. Any profits Waterpreneurs will generate will be reinvested in the further growth of the company, or allocated to support local communities’ projects connected to its activities.
Waterpreneurs priorities for the next months is to validate its concept through small projects in Asia and Africa that will help it identify new business models to enable the scaling-up of local, water-focused entrepreneurial ventures.
